Some things you need to know about Easter celebrations

As christians are about to celebrate Easter slated to hold on April 4, 2021, here are a few things you need to know about Easter celebrations.

Easter is a Christian festival that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the death on the third day after his crucification on the cross.

Easter is also called Pascha (Aramaic, Greek, Latin Word).

The origin of Easter is not certain, as some have opined that it came from Anglo-Saxon Eeastre or Eastre - a Teutonic Goddess of spring and fertility. Another is Norse Eostur, Eastur or Ostara - "the season of the growing sun" or "the season of new birth".

Easter is linked to the Jewish passover - As Jesus celebrated passover with his disciples in an event known as the "Last Supper".

Passover is remembered by the Jews as the day of freedom and Exodus from Egypt.

Easter celebration has no fixed date, as it is determined yearly as an offset from the date of the passover and is calculated based on a Lunisolar Calendar (computus).

Easter follows a 40 day period called Lent. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday - A time for repentance and remembrance and ends on Good Friday.

A week leading to Easter is called the "Holy Week" which includes Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday.

Palm Sunday is the day Jesus entered Jerusalem.

Maundy Thursday is the day Jesus had his "Last Supper".

Good Friday is the day Jesus was crucified on the cross.

Easter has celebrations and observances all over the world as follows, church services, festive family meals, Easter egg, giving of gift, prayers, all night vigil and sunrise service.
